Wastewater Operator Training |
| Wastewater collection and treatment plays a vital role in protecting the environment. A treatment plant uses a series of treatment stages to clean the contaminated water so that it may be safely released to the environment. It is critical for those involved in operating and maintaining a wastewater collection and treatment system to have the appropriate level of knowledge and understanding of the impact of their activities and decisions on the quality of the receiving water. |

Chemistry and Calculations for Clarifier and Sludge Conditioning
WWT-68-CT |
This course has been developed as a general overview for participants about the basic fundamentals of sludge collection and conditioning for dewatering treatment.
Learning Objectives:
This course looks at sludge collection, primarily through settling (physical/chemical clarification), and addresses the basic calculations associated with sludge accumulation. Sludge - effectively the collection and concentration of harmful materials removed from wastewater during treatment - is then addressed as to its characteristics and how it may then be conditioned for further volume reduction via centrifuge, pressure filter or belt filter press. The basics of sludge conditioning - from chemicals used, bench scale jar testing and the calculations of dosage levels - are addressed to provide operators with a working knowledge of how to determine which additive, often among many, is most cost-effective. Sludge, the complex, residual product of wastewater treatment, needs its own focus of attention. |
