When equipment runs, it generates heat. Overheating can lead to equipment malfunctions and possible downtime. In order to prevent this, cooling and chilled water systems are set up to continually remove heat from the components to keep them within a desired temperature range. This course describes the design of cooling and chilled water systems as well as the principles of operation for both chilled and cooling water systems.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • List hazards and safety guidelines associated with cooling and chilled water systems
  • List the costs that must be taken into consideration when designing a cooling and chilled water system
  • Identify and describe the major components in cooling and chilled water systems
  • State the source of cooling water makeup
  • Describe the principles of operation for chilled water systems
  • Describe the steps involved in the operation of a closed loop chilled water system

Water is used in virtually every step of the pulping and papermaking process. It is used for cooking, bleaching, washing and fiber transport. It is used for steam creation and cooling. This module covers the major sources of mill raw water, the contaminants commonly found in raw water, as well as raw water testing and treatment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how water is used in a mill
  • List the major sources of mill raw water
  • List the major classes of contaminants in raw water
  • Identify and describe some of the important tests run on raw water
  • List the common major treatment steps for raw water treatment
  • Identify and describe the additional treatment steps required for boiler feedwater
  • Identify and describe the safety hazards and safe work practices associated with fresh/raw water systems

Seal water systems used on paper and board machines are used to cool and lubricate key equipment, create seals, and increase the efficiency and operation of key equipment. This course discusses the typical equipment used in seal water systems, as well as safety guidelines and hazards around seal water systems.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of seal water systems on paper and board machines
  • Identify and describe the equipment that can be included in seal water systems
  • Explain the difference between “once through,” partial recovery, and closed loop seal water systems
  • Describe the chemical treatments that are sometimes used in closed loop seal water systems
  • Explain the importance of proper seal water pressure
  • Explain the importance of proper seal water filtering
